Giving away $100 in tickets!

So the ticket broker Coast to Coast Tickets has a Facebook page now, and they're looking to get people aware of it, so they're giving away a $100 gift card good towards anything on their site in a random drawing of their Facebook fans on May 4th. Should be enough for two 49ers tickets, for sure.

Right now, looks like there's only 81 facebook fans total on their page, making that a 1 in 81 shot if the drawing happened today (I'm sure there will be more when the drawing happens on May 4, but those are still pretty decent odds)!

What's up with the 49ers website? It's all ads, and even some of those don't load right. I couldn't even figure out how to get to the actual information. The closest I came was some of the team hanging out with kindergartners. Irritating.

Summertime Blues

Is it fall yet? I won some Oakland A's baseball tickets in a raffle and went to the game. I do enjoy baseball somewhat. But there isn't nearly enough hitting and shouting to keep me entertained. Even the crowd is subdued. Give me violence in my sports, please. :)

Wax=Scary

Why are wax museums so scary? I went to the one at Fisherman's Wharf again last week (out-of-town visitors with me, of course), and I got the heebiejeebies as usual. I'm not scared of candles or even ear wax. Ooh, maybe if each figure had a wick coming out of its head. Yeah, that's what they need. I'll drop a suggestion in the museum's box.

My dad isn't exactly great with the interwebs. He knows they are a series of tubes and all, but he's not really comfortable with actually using them. He knows I get most of my sports tickets online, and he wanted to get some WWE wrestling tickets for my nephews. (I explained to him that WWE should really fall under the category of theater, but whatever.)

Anyway, I walked him through the process of googling, clicking, and all that fun stuff. He did the whole transaction himself, and I was so proud. Now I have some idea how he must have felt watching me learn as a kid. Cheesy I know, but it was a nice moment.

OTAs Starting

Jennings may be out

Jonas Jennings is being placed on injured reserve, so he's probably played his last game of the season, and maybe even his last game for the 49ers. Considering that he's been a disappointment from the beginning, this could really be a good thing, especially since his replacement, Adam Snyder, is better and cheaper. I doubt he can save the season though. Maybe he'll offer hope for next year. It's been really hard to be a 49ers fan lately (lately meaning the past few years!).

Smith Carries 49ers

Alex Smith had a career day all in the 4th quarter leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 24-14 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Smith threw for 2 touchdowns and ran another one in the 4th quarter preventing the Seahawks from celebrating another divisional title. Next week's game will be against the Arizona Cardinals, and this time next week I should be talking about the back-to-back wins and how Alex Smith is really showing that he might have what it takes to make it in this league.

Reggie Bush has Career Day

Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints tore the San Francisco 49ers defence apart on Sunday with 4 touchdowns and 168 total yards. Bush would have had 5 touchdowns, but he fumbled the ball out of bounds during one of his runs, cutting it short. The 49ers try to get back on track after losing their second game in a row by hosting the Green Bay Packers next Sunday.

Chicago Bears Roll On, Squashing 49ers

Been out of touch, and then coming back to this! 41-10. But I guess our 'Niners are in good company--or at least we're far from alone, being the 7th team in a row defeated by the Chicago Bears this season. Among the others meeting the same fate have been the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks, as well as the lowly Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals.

I'll say one thing for our guys. I was pretty demoralized by the end of the first quarter, and the rest of the half didn't help. But in the 4th quarter, between Joe Nedney's field goal and Alex Smith's TD pass to Antonio Bryant, we managed not to get skunked.

49ers Should Have Played the Kansas City Royals

Well, this has been a rough summer, and not only because it wasn't NFL football season. But I finally have a chance to get back to watching and blogging about my San Francisco 49ers...looks like I need to get back to hoping and praying, too!

I had high hopes going up against the Kansas City Chiefs, since both teams records were even at 1 win, 2 losses. But that was before four scoreless quarters for us, and 41 points for them! Ouch! Makes me wish we had been up against Kansas City's MLB cellar dwellers, the Royals!

Larry Allen Will Toughen San Francisco's Offense

Getting Larry Allen from the Dallas Cowboys adds more than his 325 pounds to the 49ers offensive line. He's got a mean streak, or at least he plays like he does. Now if Jonas Jennings and Jeremy Newberry could be healthy all season...QB Alex Smith would certainly enjoy that, and fans would too!

Some Trade Winds Blowing

The San Diego Chargers traded corner back Sammy Davis to the San Francisco 49ers for Tashaun Woods last week. Woods was not the most outstanding wide receiver this team has seen and I don’t blame them for making the move. We have a ton of holes to fill and if we can trade away some of our bigger salaries we will have more money to spend on the spackle job.

The Pro Bowl was entertaining this year. The NFC won the game with the help of a little rain and a lot of turnovers. The players on both sides got a chance to show off their individual skills and increase their value in the eyes of teams scouting the show for new talent.

The San Francisco 49ers had a trying season and I feel so much more relaxed now that it is over. I am pretty excited about the Super Bowl on Sunday. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks are powerhouse teams so the game should be really exciting to watch. It would be a real treat to get Super Bowl tickets and just take off to Detroit for the weekend. I can dream.

49ers in for a Rough One

Well, looks like at the end of Sunday the 49ers will have lost their 6^th straight game, with no end in sight. Looking down their schedule it’s impossible to tell when and where their next win could come from. There are definitely winnable games on the 49ers’ schedule, but it seems that the team is having a hard enough time convincing themselves that they belong on the same field as their opponent. One thing is for certain, after this season heads are going to roll.

Playing For the Future

With the trade of quarterback Tim Rattay to Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 49ers are left with the youngest and most inexperience quarterbacks in the NFL. Now the starting quarterback is rookie Alex Smith, who has only started 1 game, the backup will be ken Dorsey, with only 7 starts, and third string will be Cody Pickett, that hasn’t started a game in the NFL. When asked about how green his new quarterbacks are 49ers coach Mike Nolan said, “That's the way it is. It's where we're at and what we're working with.” Well I don’t mind this move so much, it’s always disconcerting when a team gives up on the season after 5 games, but you need to get your quarterback of the future some snaps and let him take his knocks and let him feel out the league for himself.

A Long Stretch For the Niners

This has been a very disappointing start for the season for the 49ers. In their first 4 games they have allowed an average of 33 points per game while only scoring 19 points per game. Last Sunday was a chance for them to get back on track before they ran into the Indianapolis Colts, but they lost big time to the Arizona Cardinals, 31-14. The 49ers are in for a world of hurt with their next 4 games coming up against that have at least a .500 record, two of them, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Redskins, are still undefeated. The defense needs to step first and foremost, allowing over 450 total yards per game, following by the running game, only gaining a little over 60 yards a game. It will be interesting to see how this stretch pans out.

Adding Insult to Injury

This past Sunday the 49ers lose a heartbreaker to the Dallas Cowboys, 34-31. Keyshawn Johnson caught the game winning touchdown pass from Drew Bledsoe with only 1:51 left in the 4^th quarter. The killer of this game is that the 49ers were up 31-19 at the start of the 4^th quarter and let the Cowboys score 15 unanswered points.

“It's unacceptable to lose that game,” 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. “They ought to feel the same way. It's unacceptable. We're not a 2-14 football team. When you all of a sudden think that you're a 2-14 football team, that's an OK performance.”

And to makes matters worse, Drew Bledsoe surpassed Joe Montana on the NFL all-time yards passing list. Well it’s time for the 49ers to get out of this rut and the Arizona Cardinals is a good team to get back to winning.

After winning the first game of the season, the 49ers immediately turned their attention to next week. On Sunday, September 19, the 49ers will be going to Philadelphia to face the Eagles. But a better way of saying it is that the 49ers will be playing ex-teammate Terrell Owens. Owens left a bitter taste in a lot of people’s mouths when he left, especially 49ers linebacker Derek Smith. Smith said, “I’d love to get a shot on him.” When asked about his thoughts of his ex-teammate, linebacker Jeff Ulbrich said, “I wish I could tell you how I really felt.” Well it sounds like the defense is gunning for T.O. But the real question on everyone’s mind is, what does T.O. have up his sleeve for his touchdown dance? I know I’ll be watching.

Moving On Down the Road

September 5, 2005, is a date that will remain in 49ers and NFL fans’ minds for years to come. This is the date that the greatest receiver, possibly football player, quit the game we came to love to watch him play. In regards to recent posted comments left on my blog.

Look guys I am here to talk about football not about the screw ups in the front office that the York’s have been allowing to go on for some time now. I am trying to stay optimistic about this up coming season with the trash that has been going on.

That being said it looks like Rumph won’t be playing corner back anymore. Just recently Nolan has asked him to move over to free safety which he seemed a little reluctant to do at first, but Rumph is a team player and his talent will be used at the free safety position. Kind of reminds me of Lott, you guys remember he was a decent corner but then 4 seasons later Walsh moved him to safety where he dominated.

Disregarding the video in recent news about the 49ers, I have some better news. Corner back Mike Rumph returned to join his team for the mini-camps yesterday. Rumph practically missed the entire 04’ season with a broken arm, but is now wearing a type of protective brace. If Rumph were to stay healthy, he could be the 49ers answer to there safety problem.

I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I will give our last years first round pick, Rashaun Woods, the biggest benefit of the doubt. I just have a feeling about this kid. I really feel like he his going to emerge this season in 2005. I would have really liked to have seen Hamilton show his stuff but because of his recent injury that will not happen this year.

Still I have faith in Jerry Sullivan, he will make all the deference in how are receiver core will perform this year. The more I think about it the more I get excited. Woods has an excellent opportunity to show he is worth being on the roster. So with the injury to Hamilton, Woods has one last moment to shine during training camp before any other receivers are brought in.

Set Back

2004 third round draft pick Derrick Hamilton was a promising talent in the young reicever core that the Niners have. He was penciled in as the number three receiver behind Lloyd and Battle.

Bad news though. Hamilton suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. He injured himself during practice. This is not good for the Niners who hoped Hamilton would help them out his year. But I think Nolan will figure something out.

Getting Excited

I know there is a lot of excitement around Niner land, as new head coach Mike Nolan is bringing the 3-4 defense over to San Francisco. This is really a perfect fit for outside linebacker Julian Peterson. Peterson who is just coming back from a torn Achilles is excited himself and can’t wait to try on his new defense. Peterson if 100% healthy will wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

Needing some Wood Work

New head Coach Mike Nolan took a good look at his young and inexperienced group of receivers and smiled. He mentioned if the season started today Derrick Hamilton would be the 3rd receiver or even little P.J. Fleck.

It has mostly been Arnaz Battle who is making heads turn during the Mini-camps and yes there is Brandon Lloyd, but that guy has never impressed me. I am still waiting.

As for Woods, he is dropping down the depth chart. Woods, the last years first round draft pick has not really progressed as fans would have liked him to. But I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say his lack of development was do mostly to the coaching from last season’s staff.

Never say Never

Everyone is all talk about Alex Smith and I understand why. He was our number one draft pick over all, but I would not rule out Ken Dorsey just yet. I know there are some fans out there that look down on him, but this kid is a student of the game and he always works to improve himself. Let’s not forget the possibility of having an outstanding offensive line can greatly affect the skill of all our quarterbacks.

It is surprising to me how often fans and writers don't understand that skilled and talented players no matter how gifted can not be successful with out a decent offensive line. Too often people rush to criticize players and never look at other underlining problems.

Dorsey just recently grabbed Nolan’s attention, which means if Nolan takes time to notice you, you will be more likely on his team.

Mini-camp Overview

Aside from fumbling on his first snap in team drills, rookie QB Alex Smith made a satisfying first impression with his huddle presence and signal calling. He showed some jitters but also displayed the passing touch, mobility and excitement expected from this year's No. 1 overall draft pick. Smith split most first-team snaps with Tim Rattay, who shook off a lingering foot injury and looked at ease with the new scheme.

Coach Mike Nolan hasn't anointed a starting QB yet and said even Ken Dorsey is in the thick of the race. Kid Natural?

Here are some things Aaron Rodgers has to say when he came in for an interview for the Niners. Not to shabby kid…

"I think I'm a guy you can build around," Rodgers said. "I think my leadership style plus my skills combined make me the kind of guy you can stick in a situation, and then bring guys in to make me better and make the team better."

I will admit that even though I don’t advocate taking a QB with our first pick this guy Rodgers impresses me with his confidence.

"It's been very exciting coming here. It's my childhood team growing up," Rodgers said. "It's been kind of surreal, this whole process. I'm just feeling very confident that they've got the right people in the right places here in San Francisco to be successful -- just talking with Coach Nolan, just seeing how passionate he is about bringing this team back to the standards that were set in the late '80s and early '90s."

He wants what we want…

"Being mechanical is not a bad thing," Rodgers said. "I think it's better than holding the ball lower and patting the ball, or taking one of your hands off the ball or something. I do the same thing every time, and the ball is high, and it gets out of my hand quick."

And the kid is honest…

"I'll be excited [with] anywhere I get picked," Rodgers said. "Obviously, being able to stay in the Bay and have the caravan from Chico come down to all the games would be great. But I'm excited either way, and it's been a great process."

The more I hear what Rodgers has to say the more I feel like he has potential to lead our team. He is fan as much as a player and that is what counts. I am still sticking with no QB for the first pick. Although, if Rodgers was taken I wouldn’t be upset…I would give the kid a chance.

In the Trenches

Signing LT Jonas Jennings was an excellent move by Coach Nolan. Nolan knows that in order to actually have an offense or any type of progress, one has start in the trenches. This addition will move Kwame Harris back to his right tackle position and adds another seasoned vet to line.

With Jennings and Harris on the outside and Newberry coming back 100% from is injury that caused him to miss 15 games last season, you can expect an automatic upgrade with the Niners offense. And Nolan started the upgrade in the right place… in the trenches.

Don't Draft a QB

I personally believe that neither Aaron Rodgers nor Alex Smith is worth a number one pick. I feel everyone that is around the Niners front office is worried about upgrading so fast that they tend to over look Dorsey and Pickett.

I feel the number one pick this year is only worth two names and those names would be WR Braylon Edwards and LB Derrick Johnson.

It is not like we can’t a QB later in the rounds. The only thing that the Niners needed last season in ’04 was O-line and some discipline. Discipline will be installed with Nolan and Singletary and the O-line was addressed with the addition of Jennings.

Jennings at LT and Harris back to RT. Lets not forget about the anchor in the line, Mr. Newberry. This line is nice upgraded already. Exciting isn’t it.

Give our quarterback the chance that should be given to them. Let other teams gamble with Rodgers and Smith, in doing so other viable players will be available in the later rounds.

Please Nolan I beg you not to draft a QB it would be a waist.

The San Francisco Treat

So the question around the bay area is… will Jerry Rice be able to put on the scarlet and gold on last time?

Now before I answer this question, I would just like to state that I feel it would be a great move on behalf of Coach Nolan to sign Rice for one more year. My logic behind this would be that Rice could be a great mentor to the younger players. I think we all know that even though Rice is 42, he is in excellent health because of his work ethic.

The knowledge that Rice possess is invaluable to the young and talented receivers the Niners have. If the Niners had Rice and Sullivan working to better the younger receivers then you could imagine the maturity level would rise and the play would excel.

But the truth my friend is that Nolan is not interested in signing Rice. If anything, San Francisco would let him retire in a Niner uniform by signing a one day contract and that would be it.

New Look

Now that Mike Nolan hired Billy Davis, you can pretty much count on the Niners defense turning back to a 3-4 defensive look rather than their traditional 4-3. I believe the last time the Niners ran the 3-4 was in 1993.

And it is not like Nolan doesn’t know about the 3-4, after all that is what he ran in Baltimore with Ray Lewis and the rest of their talented Linebacking corps. Nolan is a big fan of linebackers, the hiring of Singletary and Billy Davis; one can see that Nolan is paying attention to the Niners most talented group.

In linebackers like Julian Peterson, Jamie Winborn, Derek Smith, and Jeff Ulbrich Nolan will use their abilities to have each blitz at certain times. Regardless if the defensive line can’t produce well enough for the 3-4 defense look for it to at least be apart of the 3-down package.

Good Job

Mike Nolan has really set an impressive tone around the once mighty and still beloved San Francisco 49ers. The mood has gone from skeptic views of Mr. York to optimistic reassured, relief from Mr. Nolan.

Nolan added Mike Singletary to the staff first. With his defensive mind set, he paid quick attention to the Niners LB, realizing the 49ers best weapon are their line backers. So Nolan hired Jerry Sullivan to help cultivate the raw talent from the Niners young WRs. He also added quarterback coach Jim Hostler and Offense Coordinator Mike McCarthy, who will establish the ever-so missed West Coast Offense.

...and the most recently the hiring of Scot McCloughan to fill the void of GM as the Vice President of Player Personnel

Left With Out a Clue

My o' my, what have we gotten ourselves into. John York the owner of the San Francisco 49ers decided to fire head coach Dennis Erickson and dismissed general manager Terry Donahue for an imperfect 2-14 season posted this year.

Apparently the fans in the bay area where getting a little disgruntled and forced Mr. York to do something desperate. I am not saying it is a bad move, just a tact-less one. A simple reason of explanation is to fire a head coach for a poor job, yes, but to fire a head coach for the fans, no.

Mr. York when you make a decision you have to stick by it. You can't expect for the rebuilding of a team to take a season or too. Especially since you dismantled any structure the great Bill Walsh put up for your wife Denise's brother.

Walsh will never be recreated. Erickson was a good coach, with a patient head on his shoulder. He had a young talented and very inexperienced team left to work with. Keep in mind Mr. York it was a team you approved through Donahue.

Donahue was doing you a favor making room under the salary cap. Maybe next you won't be so cheap. But just like Bush, the damage is done and the repercussions are going to be repaid.

I just feel bad for the players that have to go through all this. The great ones like B.Y. and Derek Smith, and Tony Parrish. Lets not forget about Julian Peterson but he likes a lot of money, so if Mr. York really wants to impress me he needs to do one of two things:

A) Sign J. Peterson to a long term contract or

B) Use the first pick to get D. Johnson in the draft to replace Peterson

Keep Your Head Up

It just seems to be that type of season. The Niners are the worst team in 2004. I say that though with as much love for the franchise as possible. Being a huge Niner fan myself.

The silver lining is that we will get the number one draft pick.

Though I don't feel that is much to brag about. It will be be hard drafting the talent with out Bill Walsh. If anything that is what Bill Walsh was best at. Finding the talent. His last draft choice for the Niners was Eric Johnson. Look at him now.

But as the end of the season is one game away for the niners. One can only hope that next will be better, and that next year we will see more Rashaun Woods, and Newberry and Peterson(cross your fingers)will be back and Plummer will be back. Rattay Likely Done For Season

With two games remaining in the 2004 regular season, it appears that the year is over for Tim Rattay. Head coach Dennis Erickson said in a Sunday conference call that he not expecting his young quarterback to play again and possibly join the Injured Reserve list.

"I would be surprised if he played the rest of the year, so we've got to sit down and decide (what to do)," Erickson said.

Rattay’s season has been filled with injuries that have included a torn groin, forearm issues and currently a torn plantar fascia in his right foot. He has thrown for 2,169 yards, 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while missing five starts due to injury.

Erickson was asked if the 49ers had seen enough of Rattay to make a complete evaluation of his play.

"I don't think he was physically at his best to perform, so no, I don't think it would be a fair evaluation of Tim,” Erickson said.

Ken Dorsey will continue to start in Rattay's absence.

49ers Fall To Redskins At Monster Park

The 49ers hopes of their first winning streak of the season were dashed in the first-half after Antonio Pierce returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown. Pierce’s score gave the Redskins a 14-point cushion that would be too much for the 49ers inconsistent offense to overcome as Washington rolled to a 26-16 victory at Monster Park.

Ken Dorsey had a day he would like to forget as the quarterback struggled against the NFL’s second-ranked defense. The 49ers offensive line held up well and gave Dorsey time to throw, but the young signal caller was intercepted four times on the day while completing just 20-of-38 passes for 206 yards.

The day started with promise for Dorsey and the San Francisco offense. On the teams opening possession, Dorsey coolly lead them downfield and capped a nine-play, 71-yard scoring drive with a beautiful 17-yard strike to Brandon Lloyd in the end zone. The former Miami Hurricane was an impressive four-of-five for 61 yards on the initial drive.

But that was it for the 49ers offense in the opening half. After gaining 71 yards on the opening series, the team gained just 53 on their remaining six possessions of the half. Dorsey was intercepted three times, including the Pierce touchdown, and Washington converted those into 13 of their 26 total points.

"Well you know we came out and had several turnovers and that's really what its been like for us all year," Curtis Conway said. "We have a lot of work to do in the offseason to try and get this thing turned around."

San Francisco finished the day with 254 yards of total offense. Maurice Hicks led the ground game with 11 carries for 37 yards. Kevan Barlow had six carries for 18 yards, including a long of 12.

Clinton Portis paced the Washington running game with 110 yards on 35 carries. Patrick Ramsey completed 18-of-27 passes for 214 yards and one touchdown.

San Francisco's special teams unit had another solid day, receiving a blocked punt from Keith Lewis that was knocked out of the end zone for a safety.

"We call those effort plays. If you give 100% every play, every game, those things will happen," Lewis said.

The 49ers, 2-12 overall, return home to face the Buffalo Bills on December 26.

The Only Constant

Just like most things in life. The only constant in life is change.

The NFL is apart most people's life and it changes all the time. I like to call it the see-saw effect. The good teams will be good and the bad teams will be bad. But probably for only 5-8 years depending on free agency, but that is not the point. The point the bad teams get better draft picks. So, there for, if the people in charge of personal are smart enough they rebuild through the draft and become a team of power again. Teams like these would be the Chargers and the Falcons. Once bad then good then bad then good. And this is the way of the NFL.

You have to find your nucleus.

So Niner fans just look foward to the draft.

The Fall

It has been 12 weeks into the season and the dismantle of the 49ers offensive has shown heavily. More than what I would have liked to see. But it seems what the Niners lack the most is a positive turn over ratio.

The biggest case for the 49er's this season is not in the way the youth are playing. It is not in the coaching. It is not even really the departure of Garcia and Owens. Just image for a moment what would the out comes be if the Niners had a positive turn over ratio. How many games were lost because of turn overs. If the niners figure out how to hold on to the ball i think there could be some light at the end of the tunnel.

The Niners Stand at the bottom of the league (NFL) sharing the worst record with themselves. What does it take for a team to win. What do you do when the Dolphins beat you.

49ers Fall To Seahawks

Tim Rattay threw for 259 yards and two touchdown passes in his return to the lineup Sunday, but his effort was not enough to offset a three-touchdown performance from Matt Hasselback and a Seattle team that rolled up 453 yards of total offense in a 42-27 victory over the 49ers at Monster Park.

San Francisco falls to 1-7 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 5-3 and regains the NFC West lead.

"It's a disappointing loss for us," Dennis Erickson said. "I thought we came out and played as hard as we could play for the first time in a while. It's hard when you can't come up with the big plays."

The loss overshadows a respectable day from the 49ers offense that also saw Kevan Barlow rush for 61 yards and a touchdown. In fact, the 49ers held the lead in this game at three different points, the last time coming at the opening of the third quarter when Rattay rolled to his right and found Brandon Lloyd in the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown pass and a 24-21 lead.

That lead would be short lived; three plays long to be exact, as the Seahawks turned to the arm of Hasselback and the legs of Shaun Alexander. Hasselback found Koren Robinson on a 25-yard scoring pass to cap a three-play, 73-yard scoring drive that erased the 49ers lead for good with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter.

Hasselback would strike again early in the fourth quarter, connecting with Darrell Jackson on a 39-yard touchdown for a 35-24 lead. Jackson had five receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns against a depleted 49er secondary that was absent Ahmed Plummer for the second consecutive week.

Alexander finished the day with 160 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while the Seahawks posted 184 total rushing yards on what is normally a solid 49ers rush defense. San Francisco’s defense also struggled on third down as the Seahawks converted 9-of-14 (64%) attempts, including a third-and-10 from their own six-yard line that saw Alexander rip off a 13-yard run.

"We gave up 42 points defensively," Jeff Ulbrich said. "I don't think we did enough to win this game, so its a disappointment."

San Francisco will now look to get back on the winning track as they host the Carolina Panthers next Sunday at Monster Park.

“We’ve got to stay together because everyone outside this locker room will be against us,” Curtis Conway said. “We have to stay together and keep working hard. That’s all we can do.”

Whiting Out; Carter Expected Back

The 49ers received disappointing news on the injured left knee of defensive end Brandon Whiting. An MRI exam revealed a torn ACL in his left knee and the veteran will miss the rest of the season.

Whiting injured his knee while rushing quarterback Craig Krenzel in Sunday's game against Chicago. He was assisted off the field by team trainers and was unable to place any weight on his leg at the time.

“He’ll be out for the year. He’ll have surgery here in the next week or so. He hurt it at the end of the first half. He didn’t really hit anybody. He just planted it wrong it and just kind of went,” Dennis Erickson said. “It’s too bad. He’s had nothing but problems. They (doctors) feel like he’ll be able to come back next year.”

There is some hopeful news along the defensive front with the expected return of Andre Carter to practice on Wednesday. Carter has missed the last six weeks with a back injury and has been busy recovering from back surgery.

“We’ll see exactly what kind of shape he is in as far as his availability against the Seahawks on Sunday,” said Erickson.

There also is an outside chance that Andrew Williams, who broke his leg in the preseason, might be ready to return to practice this week.

Ratty's Welcome Back Party

Through all the injuries and doubtfulness the Niners QB Tim Ratty seemed to be following suit of the greats before him. I know you all might be thinking that is pretty a big statement, but Ratty set a new Franchise record with 38 completions surpassing Joe Montana's 37 completion game on Novemeber 6, 1985 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Now when you think about the previous quarterbacks in San Francisco, that will open some eyes. Tim Rattay also threw for career high 417 yards, with 2 touchdown passes and a not single interception in 57 attempts. Rattay also threw for one 2 point conversion and ran another 2 point conversion in him self.

Rattay brought the Niners back from a 16 point deficit in the 4th quarter. The score went from 12 - 28 to 31 - 28(OT). Ratty also got NFC player of the week award. God job. Rattay utilized TE Eric Johnson as his main weapon.

Johnson had career high numbers as well, and now he leads the league with 41 receptions. Not bad for an Ivy league guy(also Walsh's last pick).

Bay Area Beatings!!

Ugh. Morale is currently low in the Bay-area, however, for football at at least, there is plenty of time to recover. From nfl.com:

First the Oakland A's were knocked out of Major League Baseball playoff contention on Saturday, then the San Francisco Giants followed suit on Sunday. And to cap off a rough weekend in the Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers were soundly beaten 24-14 by the St. Louis Rams on Sunday night to fall to 0-4 on the season. After being shutout for the first time in nearly 27 years in their Week 3 loss, the 49ers offense struggled again and didn't get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter. The Rams came out firing and scored all 24 of their points in the first half to put the Niners in a hole they could not climb out of. "When you've lost four like we have, obviously there's some fractured confidence and some fractured morale," coach Dennis Erickson said. "All we can do is fight through it."

Under-Rated at 0-2

This team isn't as bad as the 0 and 2 record suggests. Its character and work ethic that make a team better. I feel that Dennis Erickson has put that in the mind set of his young team. People say there isn't talent on this team but there is. The fact these players do not have experience as much as the other teams they play is what hurts. But as the season progress, you well see a better football team each week.

Offensively, the Niners will try to run the ball on the Hawks. The Niners are without Newberry and Harris. But that doesn't seem to bother versatile Kyle Kosier and rookie Justin Smiley. Plus, the Hawks are playing without Chad Brown and are relying on a rookie DT (Tubbs) to plug the middle. I think the Niners dominate Seattle's line just like NO's line. Even the banged up NO line is still better than a healthy Seattle line. Although the Hawks will probably load up in the box against the run. In that case the Niners do have a man by the name of Fred Beasley who always picks up the slack. Kevin Barlow might not get 100 yards, but Barlow, Terry Jackson, and Jamal Roberston will collectively put up 100+ yard game against the Seahawks. The Niners have something to prove, if this holds true then we will see it being led by an under-rated 2nd year Ken Dorsey.

Defensively, the Niners have to make sure Hasselback does not have a good game. Blitz-es would be nice if there are no more break downs in the secondary. Last week against the Saints the Niners blitz-ed at first and Heard was way out of position. If that can change this week I think this under- rated offense can put up enough points to win the game. The Niners have a deep and talented pool of linebackers maybe even the best group collectively in the NFC. The Niners will stop to the run. It is up to Secondary to make some big plays.

We beat ourselves.

That’s what Jamie Winborn had to say following the 49ers loss to the Falcons. The 49ers linebacker certainly did his part, sacking Vick, forcing a fumble and constantly disrupting Atlanta’s offense.

And certainly the defense did its part. Holding the dangerous Vick to just 10 yards rushing, sacking him four times and allowing just 227 total yards.

“We stuck to our gameplan. We knew we had guys that could run with him, we knew that we had to contain him, but our plan was to not let down and stay after him,” Winborn said. “We did that, but it wasn’t enough.”

Winborn and Julian Peterson started the game on fire, forcing the fumble of Vick that led to a blocked punt deep in Falcons territory. Unfortunately, the 49ers costly mistakes began when Kevan Barlow fumbled at the 13-yard line.

That would be followed by a costly interception late in the game and 10 penalties that would end momentum. Despite all that, the 49ers found themselves in the hunt at the end of the game were just a conversion away from overtime.

“It’s tough. It leaves a sour taste in your mouth. But at the same time it shows our resilience and how tough we are as a team. And that we can stick together and come back from an amount of points where no one gave us a chance,” Brandon Lloyd said. “A lot of guys could have folded, put down the camp and went home. “We stuck in there, came back and left it on the field.”

Johnson Impressive
Eric Johnson showed that he is back and ready for the season as he tied a career-high with eight receptions and set a new career-best with 89 receiving yards. Six of his receptions came in the fourth quarter, including a 16-yard touchdown.

His touchdown brought the 49ers within two points.

“I think this team showed it doesn’t give up when we are behind,” Johnson said. “We made a statement about what kind of character this team has. We’re not going to back down; we’re not going to give up.”

13 Players Released

The 49ers released 13 players Sunday, most notaby quarterback Brandon Doman and wide receiver Arland Bruce.

Doman, a former fifth-round draft pick, had been locked in a battle with Cody Pickett for the third quarterback position but was outplayed by the rookie. Bruce, who spent the 2003 season on the 49ers practice squad, was slowed by a hamstring injury and did not play in any of the three preseason games.

Other players of note released Sunday were punter Andy Groom and running back Jason Wright. Groom was outkicked by rookie Andy Lee during Friday’s game in Minnesota and Wright, the only free agent running back signed by the 49ers, struggled for playing time behind Maurice Hicks and Jamal Robertson.

Rounding out the list of players cut are: S Calvin Carlyle, G Alonzo Cunningham, LB Greg Carothers, WR Kahlil Hill, FB Brian Johnson, T Matt Knutson, DT Demetrious Maxie, DT Dan Rumishek and LB Melvin Simmons.

Swapping Defensive Tackles?

The 49ers swapped a pair of defensive tackles Tuesday, adding Dan Rumishek to replace Bryan Henderson. Henderson, formerly of the Arena League’s Arizona Rattlers, left camp for personal reasons.

The 6-4, 275-pound Rumishek broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2003. His rookie season was spent on Injured Reserve after suffering an injury in a preseason contest against Detroit. In March, he signed with the Chicago Bears but was released during the second week of camp.

Rumishek played his college football at the University of Michigan where he was a four-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Big Ten performer.

Filling in for injured starter Tim Rattay, Dorsey completed 8 of 12 passes for 94 yards and guided two lengthy drives that ended in field goals. "It was a good start," Dorsey said. "It's a lot faster and more intense. It's a lot different from what I'm used to. As the game went on, I had more confidence." Terry Jackson (7-yard run), Arnaz Battle (61-yard punt return) and Gabe Crecion (21-yard catch) scored touchdowns. In a wild fourth quarter in which the teams combined for 30 points, third-string QB Cody Pickett completed 5 of 7 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown. Not only is training camp just starting up, but there are a few questions surrounding the 49ers. The team's starting quarterback, Tim Rattay, is still getting over groin surgery from a few months ago and is listed as day-to-day. Defensive stalwart Julian Peterson has yet to be signed, as is first-round draft pick WR Rashaun Woods. San Francisco needs these players to be an integral part of the team, otherwise depth is going to be even thinner. While both of them will be signed eventually, they will need all the practice they can get in camp. Other than that, everyone is expected on time and ready to go. " Well, we are going to review a lot of the things that we did in mini camp," head coach Dennis Erickson said, "We're going to start with the basics and work our way through it on both sides of the football."
